When I awoke, it was still dark outside, and I was still lying on the carpet by the dining room table, but the house was stirring, and the kettles were whistling. I had no idea how much time had passed. I looked down with a startled panic, worried that my injured mind had dreamt up the entire wonderful incident of my beautiful man’s return. But, the stake was nowhere to be seen, and the hole in my human bloodstained shirt reassured me that all that I remembered happening was, in fact, real.
I scrambled up woozily.
“Vibhi?” I called weakly.
With a gentle whoosh, my dashing Brit stood before me with a wide smile, holding steaming milk carafes in each hand. He guzzled one down in one swallow while holding out the other to me. The tell-tale thirst that always accompanied our exchanges exploded inside of me, and I chugged the entire jug gratefully and handed it back to him. He placed them on the dining room table and scooped me into his warm arms.
The delicious flavours of milk and honey emanating from his being teased my senses, and I had no will power to resist him as he pulled me into a tender embrace so full of deep, eternal love that I could have melted right into him and never come back.
But, after a few moments of blissful passion, I pulled away as the logical adult inside of me forced me to remember the real world that, despite my greatest wishes, I could not just ignore.
“Vibhi, a lot has happened…” I whispered.
He took my hand and led me into the parlour. He sat on the lumpy, red velvet divan and beckoned for me to join him. “You’re still weak,” he reminded me. “Let’s sit calmly while you recover. I’m so glad that I got here in time. You reeked of death.”
“I know. I could smell my own decomposition.” I shuddered at the memory.
He caressed my hair lovingly, brushing a rogue grey tendril out of my eyes. “Well, that’s one way of keeping your place in society.” He smiled, acknowledging the subtle fact that my falsely grey hair had not been impacted by the youth-inducing side effects of his healing plasma. “It suits you, but then again, so does everything.”
“Vibhi, I really, truly thought you were gone. Maya told us that the Russian probe exploded. I asked scientists, I did my own research––everything corroborated the notion that even if you and Neha had survived, there was no way you’d ever be able to make it back to Earth!”
“Don’t worry,” he consoled me. “They were not wrong. They just don’t know what we now know.”
“But you don’t understand! You’ve been gone for almost ten years!” Desperation piqued in my voice, and I fought back another round of tears as the sheer emotion of my painful injury, our beautiful reunion, and my impending wedding to someone else worked its way to the surface.
“Ten years?” he gasped. “Shanti, I had no idea it had been so long! I mean, I knew it was a while, but ten years! Time passes differently there.
